दोस्तों कावेरी घाटी की ओर मुख वाली यादवगिरि या यदुगिरी के नाम से जानी जाने वाली चट्टानी पहाड़ियों पर निर्मित चेलुवनारायण स्वामी मंदिर मेलकोट में स्थित एक प्रसिद्ध तीर्थ स्थल है।दोस्तों इस प्राचीन मंदिर में स्थापित प्रमुख पीठासीन देवता चेलुवनारायण स्वामी है जो श्री हरि भगवान विष्णु के ही एक रूप हैं दोस्तों मैसूर के तत्कालीन राजाओं के संरक्षण में इस मंदिर में काफी समृद्धि हासिल की थी।

दोस्तों इस प्राचीन मंदिर को नक्काशी दार खंभों से पंक्तिबद्ध किया गया है दोस्तों मंदिर के शीर्ष पर एक गुंबद स्थापित है जिससे अद्भुत रूप से नक्काशीदार मूर्तियों से सजाया गया है। दोस्तों इस प्राचीन मंदिर के प्रमुख देवता चेलुवनारायण स्वामी है जो उनमगासु विली और चेलुवापिल्ले राया के नाम से भी जाने जाते हैं दोस्तों ये भगवान विष्णु के ही एक स्वरूप हैं।
दोस्तों मंदिर परिसर में मौजूद शिलालेख में भगवान को राम प्रिया के नाम से भी उल्लेख किया गया है दोस्तों माना जाता है कि प्रभु श्री राम ने अपने दोनों पुत्रों लव और कुश के साथ इस मंदिर का दौरा किया था और मंदिर में मौजूद देवताओं को पुष्पांजलि अर्पित की थी।
दोस्तों माना जाता है कि मुगल आक्रमणकारी महमूद शाह ने इस मंदिर पर आक्रमण कर मंदिर में मौजूद भगवान की धातु की मूर्ति को अपने साथ उठाकर लेकर चला गया था। दोस्तों भगवान की धातु की मूर्ति को वह अपनी बेटी बीबी नचियारी को खिलौने के रूप में खेलने के लिए दे दिया था।परंतु दोस्तों कहां जाता है कि वह भगवान की मूर्ति के साथ खेलने के बजाय पूजा करने लगी थी और भगवान के भक्ति में लीन हो गई थी। दोस्तों यह सब देखकर महमूद शाह ने भगवान की मूर्ति को वापस रामानुजाचार्य को लौटा दिया था।दोस्तों यह भी कहा जाता है कि वह भगवान की भक्ति में इतनी लीन हो गई थी कि उसकी मौत भी भगवान के चरणों में इसी मंदिर परिसर में हुई थी।साथ ही दोस्तों ऐसा भी माना जाता है कि उसकी आत्मा अग्नि पुंज के रूप में भगवान की मूर्ति में विलीन हो गई थी।

दोस्तों इस अद्भुत और खूबसूरत मंदिर को द्रविड़ शैली में निर्मित किया गया है।दोस्तों मंदिर के ठीक नीचे एक सुंदर तालाब का निर्माण किया गया है जो पत्थरों से बना हुआ है ।दोस्तों जो देखने में सीढ़ीदार कुएं की तरह है।दोस्तों तालाब की सीढ़ियों पर पत्थरों से धनुषाआकार तकियों का निर्माण किया गया है ताकि तीर्थयात्री उन पर आराम कर सके। दोस्तों मंदिर के प्रवेश द्वार को त्रिकोणीय मीनार से सुशोभित किया गया है तथा मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार को स्तंभों वाली संरचनाओं से सजाया गया है दोस्तों जिसके ऊपर खूबसूरत गोपुरम बनाया गया है।दोस्तों मंदिर की बाहरी भाग में खूबसूरत खंभों वाला गलियारा है जहां इन खंभों पर अद्भुत और बारीक नक्काशीदार मूर्तियों को बनाया गया है।
दोस्तों मंदिर का मुख्य गर्भगृह जहां भगवान को स्थापित किया गया है एक वर्गाकार संरचना है।दोस्तों मुख्य गर्भगृह की भीतरी दीवारों पर एक स्तंभयुक्त गलियारा भी बनाया गया है।दोस्तों मंदिर परिसर में ही मंदिरों जैसी दिखने वाली छोटी संरचनाएं जल में तैरती हुई किश्ती को सुशोभित करती है दोस्तों जो इस मंदिर की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्थापत्य विशेषता है।दोस्तों इन सभी छोटे मंदिरों को सभी दिशाओं में पंक्तिबद्ध हिंदू देवी-देवताओं की सुंदर और नक्काशीदार मूर्तियों से सजाया गया है।दोस्तों ऐसा माना जाता है कि स्थानीय लोगों के द्वारा ये देवगण इस मंदिर को बुरी आत्माओं से सुरक्षा प्रदान करते हैं।
